Otakon 2002: The Otaku Strike Back - Part IV
by Ron Ferrara
Otakon 2002

Saturday. So many things to do and not nearly enough time to do them in. To tell you the truth, Saturday is kinda a blur for me, I must have done too much so I suffered from brain information overload. But here's what I can remember. I atec something. Just to keep me going, I think eating takes up too much time at conventions and as such, should be avoided if at all possible. I went to the panel on how to make great-looking mecha and armor cosplay with Mike because he's bent on doing a Sazabi (Char's Counterattack mobile suit piloted by Char Aznable) costume sometime in the future. We got to panel early, so Tokyopop was busy holding a panel. I asked someone if anyone else had brought up the Initial D manga name change issue (Jeff told me about it). Somebody apparently had, but the question was asked again. All that was given was a crock answer (the old 'better product' excuse; which translates that they're afraid Initial D the manga won't sell, so they're doing something minor and unnecessary in order to 'offer the product to a wider audience' in the hopes of more sales). Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Tokyopop. I just think they're going against what they say is "manga done the right way." With Tokyopop's panel nearly over, they started to give out free stuff. I figured what the hell, and went up for a freebie. I didn't deprive anyone there for the entire time of something nice, like say, a Love Hina manga, so I took a Sailor Moon novel nobody wanted. I might hail mecha and action, but like any good otaku, I enjoy everything that is anime so a certain part of me is attracted to cute little bishoujo classics like Sailor Moon. I flipped through the novel. It was meant for elementary school girls given the size of the text and word usage. I think I'll read it anyway, for I am a poor soul indeed who knows no humiliation.

The mecha fans piled into the panel room as the Tokyopop guys cleared out. Boss Robot was back from last year, and I asked her [the person inside the suit] if she remembered Mark, Jeff & I running up and singing the Mazinger Z theme. Apparently she did, and told us that she was the Baron Ashura from last year and that Boss Robot was her boyfriend. There were many other people there I recognized from convention pictures. The Tallgeese from last year showed up in normal clothing to watch the panel. A Saint Seiya cosplayer from Anime Central was there. And the panel hosters brought in many items (armor and weapons) made from different materials to show us, as well as pictures of some really great costumes. The panel was very informative overall, and I definitely came out knowing much more on how to construct something that would be rather difficult for a newcomer. Thanks guys.
