2001: An Otakon Odyssey - Part III
by Ron Ferrera
Mark cosplaying as Genma in panda form

I don't remember anyone sleeping that night. I do remember going upstairs to John's room and checking out my Master Grade Nu Gundam model. I also remember playing some Macross Plus on a Sony Playstation. I kinda remember getting my hands on a .22 Henry rifle with a 6x scope and carrying it around with me, sniping things out the window (Die tree, die!). I must have fallen asleep in a chair somewhere for about six hours. When I woke up, everyone else either didn't get as much sleep or didn't get any sleep at all. It showed. After the loooong day yesterday we all agreed on having some breakfast. We had to look pretty odd, a group of half-awake college students muttering something about an anime convention in Baltimore and hotel reservations. Randy was nice enough to buy breakfast for everyone. Feeling much better, we all drove back to John's house for more rest before we head out the next day to Otakon.

The rest of the day was pretty blah. There was still the issue of the busted van that needed to get fixed. Without it, there was simply not enough space to take everyone, and you can imagine the odds of someone volunteering to stay behind.

A friend of Mark's came over to help finish his costume for Otakon. Costume? I never knew Mark was going to cosplay at Otakon. Evidently he was indeed going to, and as Genma in panda form no less. He was certainly tall enough for the part, and I thought the costume should be pretty original. After all, how many big fluffy pandas can you expect to see in a crowded convention center?

Just look at this thing. No wonder it died twice!

A few of us tried getting some sleep for the trip tomorrow, but Brian was having nervous breakdown because he had to get to the Hyatt before 12:00 and check in or they would charge his credit card some $1300. This was in no way possible because it would take longer than that to fix the second van. This meant we either all go together and Brian takes a stroke, or we break the trip into two groups, the first group going in the early morning and the second whenever they were ready.

I wanted to go early, sleep be damned! Jeff wanted to go as well, so he would drive his own car to Maryland. Obviously, Brian had to come to check in at the Hyatt. The rest would take the two vans down to Baltimore whenever the second van was in working condition. That being said, we had a plan for tomorrow. Brian was still pretty depressed over the entire thing since he thought that everyone blamed him for what was going on and the high cost of the hotel room (we were going to pay $150 for the two nights we stayed). The Hyatt was a nice hotel, but we would hardly be there anyway. It was just a place to sleep for 2 hours before we got up and headed back to the convention center. But still, we all agreed to it before the trip even started, so no one had the right to complain. I certainly didn't care, as long as I still had cash left over to spend on stuff I really didn't need (But had to have).

I didn't bother going to sleep at all that night. John got some Dance Dance Revolution pads, and we were all up playing DDR until we had to leave. Well, Mike didn't play because Mike sucks and doesn't have any fun. We must have looked incredibly stupid stomping up and down on the dance pads, but it was a lot of fun anyway. Not to mention how tiring it is; I sweated like I had just run a mile. After DDR, we went upstairs and took a shower, threw on some fresh clothes, packed our gear in Jeff's car and headed out. Tyson decided to come as well since we still had a seat available. We stopped for gas and food a few times along the way, and Brian and I got a few Z's in the backseat before we arrived.
