 Another letter from Kyle Pope, who is swiftly becoming the Ryan Matheuszik of "The Dub Track." (That's an in-joke for longtime readers of my Anime Web Turnpike column, "Last Exit." Forgive me.)
An aspect of dubs your Dub Track column hasn't addressed yet is that of dubbed songs. While not as prevalent as it was (likely due to licensing issues) some dubbed anime went as far as to dub the OP, ED and insert songs into English (and sometimes Spanish). Pioneer did this early on with releases like "Tenchi Muyou," "El Hazard," "Moldiver," etc., and even compiled their dub songs on a CD (Pioneer Animation Best of Best PICD-1004A). Media Blasters did the same with "Magic Knight Rayearth" and "Rurouni Kenshin" (though Sony shut down the "Kenshin" song dubs). Right Stuf has dubbed songs for "Irresponsible Captain Tylor," going so far as to produce an English and Spanish version of the OP and ED. Since your talents have expanded to include non-English dubs I would imagine that being a music critic wouldn't be beyond you. Anyway, just an idea for a possible future column.

How about taking a look at the dub for "Patlabor" TV? Central Park Media did the dub I believe, not something they are known for doing well. "Patlabor," being a piece about a group of strong individualists, with many wonderful character moments amongst the large cast would need a really good English cast to pull off those moments. So if you have the time or incentive, take a look at the "Patlabor" TV dub and see how it holds up.
- Travis To be honest, I wasn't aware that there was a CPM dub of "Patlabor." I know that Manga Entertainment had dubbed the two movies. I was under the impression that CPM's VHS release of "Patlabor on Television" was sub-only. If a dub has been created, it's probably a recent dub, which means there's hope that it's decent.
Interesting column on 3x3 Eyes, but I'm a bit surprised that you didn't feel the need to comment on Earl Boen's performance as Benares. For me, that "saved" the dub - I would have just switched it off if it wasn't for his performance. (Not to mention William "The Greatest American Hero" Katt as Tinzin!)
Anyway, New Gen's latest dub is NieA_7, and while it takes some getting used to, I think it's their best work so far-- their style suits the show (a very low-profile domestic comedy) better than the other stuff they've dubbed.
- Mike As I stated in the review, I gave up after two and a half episodes, so I never got to hear Benares. As for your comment regarding "NieA_7", I've just heard that dub, and I'm inclined to agree with you. Expect a full review in the months to come.
