Puffy AmiYumi Interview
Interviewed by: Isaac Lew

Akadot: The second track, Tokyo Nights, has a very familiar sound to Video Killed the Radio Star (The Bangles). Was there any influence?

Yumi: Really? It sounds familiar? When I got the demo tape from Andy it was a cute song so I couldn't resist. I had to do it.

Akadot: Just like Teen Titans theme song, you're aware that it sort of had that 60's style sound like Secret Agent Man?

Yumi: For Andy's case it would be like reminiscing the 60s but for us since they're so young, it's very new to them, and the combination of both things is very interesting.

Akadot:: I see, I see, I see- well let's talk about this cover shoot - the homage to John Lennon and Yoko Ohno's Bed-in for peace. That was anti-war statement being made. Are you protesting something as well, or just homage to back in the day or so?

Yumi: Obviously no one wants war, but also when people see the picture they'll know it and recognize it.

Akadot: You have a couple of tracks about Tokyo, which are really nice, uppity tracks. Do you have a reason for that, or have any special places, favorite places in Tokyo you like to visit?

Yumi: Tokyo's a wonderful place and there are so many different essences about it. But you can say that about any place. It's a lot of fun and I really want everyone to come and see Tokyo.

Akadot: We do tours to Japan called Pop Japan Travel. I want to get the official "Puffy AmiYumi PJT recommendation". Where do you recommend someone should go in Tokyo?

Yumi: Really?! An anime tour group?! Akihabara is obviously a great place for everyone to visit and also the new Roppongi Hills. Yes, that's somewhere everyone is going, although I haven't really been there. And there's an intersection in Shibuya, which is right in front of the station. There's just so many people there.

Yumi

Akadot: If one of your fans is going to Japan on our tour, is there a certain store you would recommend?

Yumi: Kiddyland, which is like a toy store is a great place. We don't really go, but middle schoolers go. The have all sorts of T-shirts with funny sayings and last time Andy went, he bought a whole bunch of them.

Akadot: I have a couple of those. So here we go, in 2002, Puffy Ayumi took the American anime fandom world by storm! After Ami has recovered, are you guys planning a US tour any time soon?

Yumi: They're giving Ami a little bit more time to settle with raising her child but afterwards, we'll gradually started talking about it and plan something, but we love to do live so of course we would love to come back and do more. We just want to have fun.

Akadot: Girls just wanna have fun, right?

Yumi: Yes!

Akadot: I just want to talk about the J-Pop scene crossing over to America. What is your honest opinion as far as American fans accepting J-Pop? Do you think it's destined to get bigger or stay underground with today's music scene?

Yumi: J-Pop coming over to the states is a very difficult process. But we just want to listen to good music. We don't really care for fame that much, but rather want to be able to enjoy what we can do to the fullest.

Akadot: Last time we were here, we interviewed Polysics, and Hayashi was saying that his ultimate goal was for Polysics to change the music world. What's Puffy's ultimate goal?

Yumi: Unlike Polysics, we don't really have a particular goal like that. But as long as we can have fun and we can do what we do to the fullest. That's the way Puffy AmiYumi works, how we think about things, and we hope the people who came along with us, will enjoy our music.

Akadot: Just feeling the vibe of the music huh?

Yumi: Yes.

Akadot: You've done so much in your career. Is their any sort of style of music that you haven't done that you just want to take hold of? What kind of style is that?

Yumi: Well, we haven't released that many songs and albums in Japan. So as far as genres, there's still a lot more we need to do so I can't say I know exactly yet. I feel that the Nice album has a very mature sense to it and it's something that we wanted to do.

Yumi

Akadot: Not only is Akadot full of anime and manga fans, but also J-pop fans, and these questions are from the Akadot fans. How is Ami?

Yumi: She's doing very well. I see her every once in a while. Ami's experiencing many new things, she's just given birth but she's making the best out of it. Before she came, she told me to do my best. So Ami, "I am!"

Akadot: What do you like to do on your days off? In America and Japan?

Yumi: Yesterday since we were so close to the border, we went to Mexico. But the only thing I got was sunburn. Coming to the states, everything is different obviously, so just walking around is entertaining. But in Japan, I would do very similar things, biking, drinking with friends, what normal people my age would do.

Akadot: Do you have a new boyfriend?

Yumi: How old do you think I am? (Laughs) I can't really be like "I don't have a boyfriend." But I can't really say I do. I'm always looking for a new one. (Laughs)

Akadot: So your love life is like shopping for new clothes. As soon as your old one is worn out, time to get some new ones.

Yumi: Yeah pretty muchc I'm somewhat joking though. (Laughs) Umm, I think I like that sometimes, but obviously I don't really practice that sort of thing. I'm not that kind of person, so don't get me wrong.

Akadot: Okay, well if that's the case, what do you define as an attractive person?

Yumi: Heh, a big gap from what they appear to be like and what they actually are. For example, someone scary but acts really nice. Talkative in the outside world, but quiet at home.

Akadot: Besides music, do you have any other interests you would like to do?

Yumi: If I were 28 cm taller, I'd like to be a model. But, I've given up on that. There are so many things we haven't done so there's a lot we'd want to do. But in regards to music, I just want more people to listen to their music.

Akadot: Has there ever been an American artist that you ever wanted to collaborate with?

Yumi: I can't really think of anyone, but I want to see a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert in the very front row.

Akadot: Last question and this goes out to all our Akadot fans. Anything you would like to tell them?

Yumi: Hello, Akadot fans! Even though Ami isn't here, I'm representing both of us. This Nice album is a great album, so you should all come out and get it. We'll be doing a lot more things that are exciting so keep an eye out on us.
