The Dating Experiment
by Trisha Kunimoto

For years, romantic movies have offered entertainment to millions. Deep inside, people often fantasize about having those spectacular on-screen romantic encounters which would bring excitement and adventure into their daily lives. Before The Bachelor, Joe Millionaire, and other real-life TV romance shows in America debuted, Japan had their very own reality show entitled Mirai Nikki (or translated in English as The Future Diary. With reality TV taking over the networks, it isn't surprising that the famous ABC network has remade this Japanese series into their very own entitled The Dating Experiment, which is set to debut in America primetime on June 25, 2003.

Mirai Nikki

Debuting in 1999 on TBS, the original concept of Mirai Nikki takes an ordinary man and woman who have never met and thrusts them from the life that they know into a whole new world. Leaving their money, friends, and family behind, they each are given a diary in which the future has already been written. Both players must follow the diary and act out all the situations that are provided. Situations range from a romantic night together to an unforgettable exotic location. No matter how outrageous the situations may seem, they must do as the diary says.

However, once the diary entries have ended, the couple must part forever. Now instead of the diary's instructions, it all depends on the man and woman's own actions and fate whether or not they find real love. After experiencing a romantic adventure together, each player has the choice whether they want to continue the relationship or end it. Whether the players find true romance or not, they become the stars of a Hollywood-made love story.

In Japan, Mirai Nikki was a huge success and was broadcasted on television for three years. The original concept was also created into a full-feature film and an amusement park attraction. This show's success has not only been re-created in America, but in 16 other countries including Germany, England, France, and many more. The American version is set to air on the ABC network during their summer primetime line-up and will be hosted by Hector Elizondo. The first episode will debut on Wednesday, June 25, 2003.
